A Shared Responsibility
Build a support network by getting involved in your neighborhood:
- Get to know your neighbors.
Develop friendly relationships with your neighbors and their children and grandchildren. Make your neighborhood your extended family.
- Help a family under stress. If a family you know seems to be in crisis or under stress, offer to help – babysitting, chores, errands or suggest resources in the community such as faith community leaders, teachers, counselors and doctors.
- Reach out to children in your community. A smile or word of encouragement can mean a lot, whether it comes from a parent or a passing stranger.
- Get involved in a local school. Join the parent-teacher organization and get involved. If you don’t have school age children, you can mentor through the school, become a Big Brother or Big Sister, or volunteer as a court-appointed Guardian Ad Litem.
- Keep your neighborhood safe. Start a Neighborhood Watch and plan a local “National Night Out” community event that brings together neighbors, businesses and others. Get to know each other by holding special events. Visit

Learn how your community supports families and get involved:
- Learn about education programs that help teach employment, budgeting, well-baby programs for new parents, parenting skills and stress relief for caregivers.
- Learn more about community programs that focus on strengthening marriages, fatherhood roles, substance abuse treatment, homelessness, and domestic violence.
- Learn how local recreation and child care centers give children a safe place to play.
Prevent child abuse and neglect:
- Make a donation to an organization that works to prevent child abuse.
- Start or join a community coalition to prevent child abuse and neglect.
- Learn how to recognize and report signs of child maltreatment.
