TIPS FOR SAFE CHILDREN AND HEALTHY FAMILIES

TIPS FOR BEING A NURTURING PARENT:

Help Your Children Feel Loved and Secure
  • Tell your children you love them – even when they do something wrong.
  • Encourage them by praising their achievements and talents.
  • Spend time with them – do things you both enjoy.
  • Learn how to use nonphysical options for discipline like “time outs,” loss of privileges, or simply expressing your disappointment.
Make Sure Your Children Are Well Cared For
  • Eat nutritious foods
  • Receive good medical care
  • Develop good sleep habits
  • Are kept safe at all times
Realize that Community Resources Add Value
  • Take children to libraries, museums, movies and sporting events.
  • Use community services for family needs such as parent education classes or respite care.
  • Communicate regularly with childcare or school staff.
  • Participate in religious or youth groups.
Seek Help if You Need It
  • Talk to someone and seek respite care when you need a break.
  • Seek counseling or take a parenting class.
  • Call a helpline like In the News or the FLORIDA PARENTING HELPLINE.
  • Accept the help – this will nurture you.
